Information on Agriculture and Livestock in Ngororero District

A. AGRICULTURE

1. Crop Production

Ngororero District cultivates a variety of crops, including both food crops and cash crops. The three main staple food crops are potatoes, maize, and beans. Other crops grown include sweet potatoes, cassava, taro, wheat, peas, bananas, passion fruits, tree tomatoes, avocados, and various vegetables such as cabbages, amaranth greens, and peppers. Sugarcane is also cultivated.

Regarding cash crops, Ngororero District is particularly rich in tea production and also cultivates coffee. Ngororero coffee is internationally recognized for its high quality and taste, frequently winning awards and international cups.

2. Forestry

Ngororero District is rich in eucalyptus forests, which provide fuel products such as charcoal. These forests contribute to clean air and play an important role in environmental conservation. The district also hosts part of the Gishwati-Mukura National Park.

B. LIVESTOCK

Ngororero District has 1,139 grazing areas covering a total surface area of 4,239.5 hectares. There are 375 livestock farmers organized into 48 cooperatives.

The livestock population includes:

  • 50,006 cattle (including 15,393 cows distributed under the “Girinka” program)
  • 12,433 goats
  • 8,419 sheep
  • 28,359 pigs
  • 5,645 rabbits
  • 11,322 chickens

The district also has 7 fish ponds.
